UFC 125 Betting Preview at Bodog

By Richard Gardner

Mixed martial arts betting at Bodog kicks off 2011 in style with UFC 125: Resolution, which will be held on New  Year’s Day in Las Vegas and is headlined by a lightweight championship bout between title-holder Frankie Edgar and unbeaten challenger Gray Maynard.

“The Answer” is the champion despite the fact he has already lost once to Maynard, that coming via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 13 back in April 2008. Maynard used his size and wrestling skill to overpower Edgar, who is the much quicker but smaller fighter.

“I’m very excited to be fighting New Year’s Day against a fighter that has a win over me. I’m looking forward to putting on a great show and avenging my one loss,” said Edgar (13-1). “There are still a lot of people that are doubting me and that’s fine. I’ve learned a lot since our last fight and I plan on successfully defending my title.”

Edgar has since won five in a row with wins over former champions Sean Sherk and B.J. Penn (twice). But he is still the current +115 underdog at Bodog for this fight. And bettors aren’t on board too much yet with Edgar’s chances as he is getting just a 43 percent lean on the line. When Edgar won his title at UFC 112 over Penn he went off at +725 and then at +250 against Penn in the rematch. Overall in his UFC career Edgar is 4-0 when he opens as a dog.

Maynard (10-0) earned his title shot in August when he defeated Kenny Florian by unanimous decision at UFC 118 on the undercard of the second Edgar-Penn fight. But because Maynard didn’t look great in a split decision win over Nate Diaz at UFC Fight Night 20 prior to that, Maynard was passed over for a title shot against Penn in favor of Edgar. The only non-win for “the Bully” came from his first fight in the UFC at the “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 finale when he memorably knocked Rob Emerson and himself out on a slam to the ground, earning a no contest.

“Edgar’s a great opponent,” said Maynard, a three-time All-American wrestler at Michigan State. “He’s improved a lot over the last couple years, but he’s always been good. He’s a tough kid and I have to be prepared for him.”

We opened Maynard as the -125 favorite at Bodog but early action was heavy on him so the line moved to -140 and eventually -150. It’s currently at -145 with Maynard getting more than 56 percent of the action. This is one of the rare bouts where there are more parlays on the underdog than on the favorite. Many players had parlays with Edgar and fellow UFC champion George St. Pierre. When St Pierre defeated Josh Koscheck at UFC 124, the book saw that almost all the parlays on Edgar were still pending so the line moved to Maynard -145. A parlay with the two champions pays out at +164. At the current number both fighters have been seeing great action, but the book still has a small decision based on the early action on Maynard.

In the first Edgar-Maynard bout, Maynard went off as a +195 underdog. That fight opened with Maynard being a +145 dog (Edgar at -175). But all the action was on Edgar and moved the line all the way up to +195 (Edgar at -235) by the time the fight started.

The winner of this bout will face Anthony Pettis, who became a Web sensation with the video of Pettis launching off the cage and kicking Benson Henderson in the face at WEC 53. The UFC and WEC are merging starting with this card as the UFC absorbed WEC’s 135-, 145- and 155-pound weight classes.
